Finding Writing Moments During Thanksgiving Chaos

Thanksgiving is a whirlwind of family, food, and festivities—but for writers, it can also be a secret opportunity to steal away some creative moments. This year, I discovered the art of carving out writing time amidst the family gatherings, turkey preparations, and inevitable post-meal food comas.

The key is preparation and creativity. Before the holiday, I packed my laptop, a trusty notebook, and a few backup writing tools. While my in-laws slept in the early mornings the living room became my temporary writing sanctuary, with early mornings and quiet afternoon lulls presenting perfect windows of productivity.

After the big meal, when everyone is sprawled on couches in a tryptophan-induced stupor, I’ve learned that no one minds if I slip away with my laptop. Everyone is either watching cartoons with the kids or napping, and suddenly—magic happens. Those stolen 30-minute intervals can be incredibly productive.

Pro tip: Download writing apps on your phone, so you can capture ideas during conversations, while helping in the kitchen, or during those inevitable awkward family moments. Sometimes the best writing happens in two-minute bursts between passing the cranberry sauce and listening to Uncle Jim’s latest story.

This Thanksgiving reminded me that writing isn’t about finding perfect conditions, but about finding perfect moments. Family time and creative time aren’t mutually exclusive—they can beautifully coexist with a little intention and creativity.

Here’s to productive holidays, warm connections, and never letting our creative spark dim, even surrounded by the beautiful chaos of family. Raise a glass for everything we are thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!
